Industrial Heaters, Sensors and Controllers

Watlow offers a huge range of cooking computers, heaters, temperature sensors and software for your foodservice equipment.

Watlow has over 90 years of heating expertise and a wealth of technical knowledge gained from the successful completion of complex projects all over the world. This translates into energy-efficient cooking, lower maintenance, easy operation, consistent and reliable food quality, and innovative offerings for your customers.

Flat heating elements

The unique shape of Watlow's FIREBAR® flat heating elements minimises coking and oil degradation, while enhancing the flow of oil past the elements' surface, helping to pull heat away from the heater's sheath.

Advantages of the FIREBAR heater's flat surface technology include:

  • Buoyancy force - the flat technology of the FIREBAR heater creates the physical principle of buoyancy force that lifts the oil into the work zone, which makes it superior to round tubular heaters
  • Smaller dimension normal to the flow - the element's width or thickness is 0.235in (5.9mm) compared with a 0.430in (11mm) round tubular element. This relative thinness further reduces drag on liquids or gases flowing past the heater, resulting in better heat transfer, quicker heat up and lower sheath temperature
  • Reduced watt density - the surface area per linear inch of a FIREBAR is up to 70% greater than the 0.430in (11mm) diameter round tubular element; this translates into optimum heater performance and longer heater life

Heaters for serving and warming equipment

Depending on your specific application needs, Watlow offers four heater types in a variety of constructions for serving and warming equipment:

  • Cast-in - if you need a custom part that becomes a functional piece of your equipment, Watlow can design a cast-in heater that is the actual size and shape you need
  • Flexible - Watlow's silicone rubber heaters are rugged, yet thin, flexible and lightweight. By putting heat where you need it most, you can improve heat transfer and decrease wattage requirements at the same time. Plus, these heaters actually conform to your equipment. Watlow also supplies subassemblies with a silicone rubber heater bonded to an aluminium plate
  • Tubular - Watlow's WATROD round tubular heater elements and FIREBAR flat tubular elements are virtually 100% energy-efficient because of the way they generate heat through the process
  • Radiant - RAYMAX® 1010 heaters are perfect for food warming applications. This heater has a 'sealed face', which keeps contaminants away from the heating element; the metal surface can also be wiped down and easily cleaned

Sensors for frying, serving and warming equipment

If you need a sensor that lets you know when your basket is ready, look to Watlow's RTD tube-style (RB) sensors, which are ideal for fryer applications because of their super responsiveness and accuracy. They are sealed and have dependable readings and customised diameters.

Watlow's ENVIROSEAL™-HD sensor keeps out moisture, oil and contaminants and is perfect for steam table applications. The ENVIROSEAL-HD has a time response of two seconds and features a submersible and 1,200psi pressure-wash rated seal, which protects the sensor.

Watlow's RTD tube-style (RB) sensors and thermocouples work well in serving and warming applications. They are sealed, have dependable readings, customised diameters (0.125in to 0.250in), quick time response and a durable rigid sheath.

Rigid sheath thermocouples provide protection and accurate placement through water-tight bulkheads. Threaded fittings and encapsulated styles are also available. The PFA encapsulated style is corrosion resistant and sealed to improve moisture resistance.

Controllers and cooking computers

Watlow's MINICHEF® 2000 was the industry's first on-off or PID configurable temperature/time and machine function controller. This cooking computer is pre-programmed for multiple applications and ready to be installed. The MINICHEF allows you to control several commercial kitchen applications at once.

Watlow temperature and safety limit controllers are perfect for warming cabinets and steam tables that require simple on-off control. The SERIES CV includes an operator interface for viewing and selecting the set point, while the SERIES CF has fixed set points and are supplied without an operator interface.

Watlow's EZ-ZONE® PM controller offers solutions to reduce system complexity and lower the cost of control loop ownership. The EZ-ZONE PM can be configured as a discrete PID controller with adaptive tuning, as a discrete, agency approved, over/under limit controller, or as an integrated control loop solution by combining the PID functionality, over/under limit functionality and high amperage NO-ARC power switching output in a single panel mount package.

Power switches for foodservice kitchens

The E-SAFE® II hybrid power switch provides reliable, accurate power switching at high amperage and high ambient temperatures in foodservice kitchens. Watlow's E-SAFE II eliminates the risk of toxic metals in conjunction with food because it is mercury-free. EC requirements are making it so mercury is eliminated in all foodservice components. In addition, the E-SAFE II has extended contact life in a compact size, making it ideal for the tight quarters of steam tables and warming cabinets. The E-SAFE II is also RoHS-compliant.
